Paper: Wireless monitoring allows more accurate study of COPD, Parkinson's patients
Wireless monitors can allow healthcare professionals to observe patients with debilitating conditions such as Parkinson's disease or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) under normal living conditions, providing a more accurate assessment of each person's health than in a clinical setting, according to a new study.
Researchers from Kalasalingam University in India created a real-time monitoring system with sensors to measure vital signs, a wireless network with a range of 750 meters, an EMR and an existing web portal to alert clinicians of serious changes in the patient's condition. They found that their system was effective for "ambulatory investigation," offering types of data collection and knowledge discovery capabilities not previously available outside a hospital or clinic.
The research team published their findings in the International Journal of Biomedical Engineering and Technology.
