St. Louis VA turns to real-time location system

The St. Louis Veterans Affairs Medical Center will install real-time location systems to track patient flow in its outpatient eye clinic and in operating suites, Healthcare IT News reports. Versus Technology, a Traverse City, MI-based vendor, will supply two versions of its RTLS technology to the VA. The eye clinic will get the aptly named VISion: Clinic product, while the company will deploy VISion: Perioperative Suite to OR. RTLS is a specific type of radio-frequency identification that actively searches for and tracks assets as they move through a facility.

The system will provide real-time location of patients and staff, help automate staff-to-patient assignments and provide real-time data on performance measures such as patient wait time. The hospital also will be able to gather historical data on patient visits, patient and staff interactions, and patient-to-staff ratios, eliminating guesswork.
