Small Michigan hospital installs big wireless infrastructure
A top-notch wireless infrastructure is no longer the exclusive domain of large, urban hospitals. In Ludington, Mich., 87-bed Memorial Medical Center has just completed a total replacement of its data infrastructure with an 802.11(n) wireless LAN to support mobile voice, data and video applications throughout the facility, Healthcare IT News reports. As is quickly becoming the norm in American hospitals, a portion of the bandwidth is being carved out to provide Internet access to patients and visitors.
The technology, from Motorola, with help from systems integrator Lowry Computers, is designed for the high security that HIPAA demands in a healthcare environment, and can monitor network performance. "The new 802.11n Motorola wireless network will not only help us meet today's application and security needs but, more importantly, will serve as the infrastructure backbone for future healthcare mobility applications like electronic medical records or medication administration," according to Daryl Crowley, Memorial's director of information services.
