RFID saves NJ academic hospital $1 million on IV pumps
Cooper University Hospital in Camden, NJ, an affiliate of the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, has saved $1 million by not having to purchase new IV pumps, thanks to an RFID system that provided an accurate inventory of existing assets. The hospital also has been able to enhance patient safety by enabling real-time drug dosage updates from existing IV pumps on a wireless network.
The savings and gains are part of a campus-wide IP telephony and wireless site survey conducted by New York City-based Dimension Data and announced Monday. The site survey helped Cooper University Hospital determine its coverage needs for a voice-over-wireless LAN and RFID systems to replace an aging, expensive phone system and to track all kinds of pricey, movable assets, including the IV pumps.
