Market for wireless personal health sensors set to take off
We've reported on wireless body-area networks (WBANs) once or twice before, and now ABI Research is lending credence to the terminology by forecasting that 400 million wireless personal health sensors will be in use by 2014. Keep an eye on the Bluetooth Low Energy, ZigBee and standard for interdevice communication called 802.15.4, as well as some proprietary data protocols, though ABI says the industry generally is looking to standardize whenever possible.
Currently, sports and fitness applications account for 90 percent of this market, but ABI sees burgeoning growth in both professional and home healthcare.
