Global market for mobile patient monitoring pegged at $1.9B by 2014

Global revenues from remote patient monitoring via mobile networks will reach $1.9 billion by 2014, according to a new report from Juniper Research.

The UK-based firm says in a report released Tuesday morning that the greatest share of early spending will go toward heart monitoring in the U.S. and mobile monitoring in general will "demonstrate substantial growth" in developed countries. But such technologies will help save money and lives in developing economies as well, though "national wealth and the structure of the healthcare market in a given geographical region will have an important bearing on the extent to which it is rolled out," Juniper says.

"In Africa, the opportunities for m-health monitoring will be limited, but SMS-based education programs will be rolled out there and these can be of great benefit," Juniper Research Senior Analyst Anthony Cox says in a press release.

The report, entitled, "Mobile Healthcare Opportunities: Monitoring, Applications & mHealth Strategies 2010-2014," also sees great potential in mobile health and fitness applications that will "eventually spawn a new market for advanced apps which integrate sensors worn on the body."
