CTIA, West Wireless tout the value of mobile healthcare

CTIA, the industry association for wireless communication, is trying to raise awareness of the role mobile technologies can play in national healthcare reform. The group convened a policy forum in Washington, DC, last week to help influence federal officials developing a definition for "meaningful use," the standard that healthcare providers must meet to qualify for health IT funding from the economic stimulus legislation.

"The sky is the limit as to where these technologies can go," Daniel Ballon, senior policy fellow at the Pacific Research Institute, said, according to InternetNews.com. "The good news is that the revolution has already started, and that we're becoming peripherally aware of it." The same outlet reports that the White House is "excited" about the prospects of mHealth.

Meanwhile, Dow Jones Newswires is reporting that the recently formed West Wireless Health Institute, backed by wireless heavyweight Qualcomm, is joining with medical device manufacturer Corventis to conduct a first-ever clinical trial of a remote heart monitor. CTIA is touting this technology as a potential means of saving billions for Medicare.
