SPOTLIGHT: Creator of mobile public health surveillance software wins inventor's award

The creator of a widely used, breakthrough software tool for mobile collection of public health data and disease surveillance in developing countries has won a prestigious inventor's award for sustainability. Georgetown University pediatrician Dr. Joel Selanikio on Tuesday was named the 2009 winner of the $100,000 Lemelson-MIT Award for Sustainability, for EpiSurveyor, an open-source program that runs on personal digital assistants and mobile phones. The Lemelson-MIT program at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology calls EpiSurveyor "the most widely adopted open source mobile health software in the world." Press release
